Early Life and Education
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu zt”l was born in 1929 in Jerusalem into a respected Iraqi-Jewish family. His father, Rabbi Salman Eliyahu, was a well-known Kabbalist and Torah scholar. From a young age, he displayed exceptional dedication to Torah study. He studied under great Sephardic sages, including Rabbi Ezra Attiya at Porat Yosef Yeshiva. His deep knowledge of both Halacha and Kabbalah shaped his leadership style.
Halachic Scholarship and Leadership
Rabbi Eliyahu became one of the most respected Sephardic Halachic authorities of his generation. He served as a Dayan (judge) in the Jerusalem Rabbinical Court and later joined the Supreme Rabbinical Court of Israel. His rulings provided clarity, practical solutions, and a deep commitment to Sephardic traditions.
In 1983, he was elected Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel (Rishon LeZion), a position he held until 1993. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen Jewish unity, promote Torah study, and preserve Sephardic customs. His influence extended to both scholars and the general public, making Jewish law more accessible.

Rabbi Eliyahu played a significant role in strengthening Jewish identity in Israel and worldwide. He regularly delivered lectures, guiding thousands of students and community leaders.
